The Jean M. Borg Scholarship

(1 award, $1,000) Candidates should be juniors or seniors, majoring in the teacher education sequence of biological sciences, and plan to teach in the area of biological sciences following graduation. The student should have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, and demonstrate involvement in community and/or campus service.

This scholarship was established by Jean M. Borg, who at the encouragement and insistence of her mother attended Illinois State Normal University, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Following her graduation, Jean taught junior high school sciences around central Illinois from 1950-1962. Jean earned her Master of Arts Degree in Counselor Education in 1962, and her Advanced Certificate in Counselor Education in 1967 from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. For the next 10 years she served as a school counselor for junior high and high school students in Champaign.

Following those experiences, Jean served as a faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of South Florida for more than twenty years. In this capacity, Jean was afforded the opportunity to travel and work all over the United States, as part of a national commission focused on the professional development for teachers. The commission worked on the development and sharing of leadership training materials for best practices in teacher education.

Through the establishment and implementation of this scholarship, Jean Borg has expressed her sincere appreciation for ISU and the outstanding education she received. It is her desire to support students who are committed to becoming excellent teachers, as she is highly aware of the need for teachers at all levels. As an incoming student at ISNU, Jean received a Veteran’s Scholarship from the State of Illinois for a student planning to become a teacher. She was able to apply for this scholarship because her father Fred W. Borg (1891-1966) had served in the United States Army, and had received the Purple Heart as a World War I veteran. Jean has always remembered the significance of that financial  support. It is her hope that this scholarship will support and inspire its recipients as well.

Essay: Please describe your commitment to teach in the area of biological sciences, and your involvement in community and/or campus service. Please limit your response to 250-500 words.
