The Bowman Fellows

The Bowman Fellows are education majors committed to being visionary leaders on campus, in their communities, and in their future field of education. The core values of the program include: visionary leadership, student-centered education, personal learning, valuing faculty, staff, and peers, and a focus on the future. The benefits of being a Fellow include opportunities for professional development, unique social activities, and opportunities to work directly with local schools and community leaders.

The Bowman Fellows is a prestigious fellowship that was established in 2004–2005 in honor of Dr. Al Bowman, the current president of Illinois State University. While being a Bowman Fellows is an honor, it also requires a modicum of responsibility. Each semester, Fellows who fully participate in the program will have the opportunity to receive a $500 stipend as well as attend a group meeting with President Bowman. In addition, Bowman Fellow graduates receive an honor stole and program notice at graduation, and letters of recommendation for their resume file.

To qualify for the fellowship, students must:

  • be from a traditionally underrepresented ethnic/racial group
  • be a freshman, sophomore, or junior
  • major in the College of Education (Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Middle Level Education
  • have a minimum 2.75 GPA

In addition, students must be able to attend meetings every other Tuesday from 5:30-7:00 p.m. during both semesters.
