Clesson receives High School Teacher of Excellence Award

(August 28, 2009) Kathy Clesson, University High School English teacher, has been selected to receive the High School Teacher of Excellence Award by the Illinois Association of Teachers of English. The award, sponsored by the Secondary Section of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), will be presented during the NCTE Convention in Philadelphia, Penn., this November.

Clesson has been with the Illinois State University Laboratory Schools since 1980. Currently, she serves as chair of the University High School English Department and coordinator of Clinical Experiences, managing Illinois State teacher candidates' classroom observations at the high school. She sponsors the Creative Writing Club, which oversees the award-winning, student literary magazine, Brome and Beyond. In addition, Clesson is a National Board Certified Teacher, an Illinois Virtual High School teacher, who has designed two of the virtual English classes, and has been an adjunct instructor in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at Illinois State.
