District Network Initiative
IL-SAELP District Network
The IL-SAELP District Network is made up of Springfield School District, Chicago Public Schools, Elgin School District, and Rockford School District. Peoria and DeKalb School Districts serve as affiliated districts to the network. The purposes of the IL-SAELP District Network are the following:
- To engage a network of school districts in a dialogue about leadership for the purpose of supporting each other in local efforts to engage in leadership reform and to inform the decisions and actions at the state level.
- To allow IL-SAELP to offer services to a network of school districts rather than single districts, as well as allowing school districts to provide services to IL-SAELP.
- To share strategies and resources with each other as we engage in similar or different strategies for strengthening the effectiveness of school leadership.
This year, the IL-SAELP District Network will engage in a variety of activities. The Consortium for Educational Change (CEC), supported through IL-SAELP funds, will offer to each of these districts a principal coaching program adapted from a model used by the New Teacher Center at the University of California-Santa Cruz. IL-SAELP will also issue small grants to CPS, Elgin, and Rockford school districts to implement district initiatives related to the following:
- CPS will conduct a series of conditions audits to assess the effectiveness and use of newly developed business service centers.
- Rockford and Elgin will send their principals to CEC’s New Administrators’ Institute (another program replicated from the New Teacher Center at University of California- Santa Cruz).
- Rockford and Elgin will also work with CEC to develop Learning Communities that are centered on implementing Reeves’ Power Standards.
- LEAD-Springfield will further develop and expand the school improvement coach and peer coaching programs that support school principals and work on the formalization of a coaching/mentoring framework for its administrators.
In June, IL-SAELP will host its second annual Leadership Academy for the IL-SAELP network and affiliated districts. Information on the past year’s Academy can be found at: http://www.coe.ilstu.edu/eafdept/centerforedpolicy/events/leadershipacademy.shtml
In addition to the Leadership Academy, IL-SAELP is also coordinating site visits between the districts.
