Locating the New Sports Complex

You are the Assistant to the City Manager of a midwestern city with a population of 500,000. The voters in your city have recently approved a proposal to build a multi-purpose sports complex that includes a stadium that will seat 80,000 people. There is, however, some controversy regarding where the stadium should be located.

In the space below, do the following:

1. Name your city and draw a map of it. Provide a scale, legend and a compass rose. Do not, of course, try to draw all the city’s streets on the map. But do include the following:

a. major roads and highways
b. rail lines
c. various regions of the city (commercial, residential, etc.)
d. major landmarks
e. other items likely to appear on the map of a large city

2. Identify three potential sites for the sports complex on your map.

3. Write a memo to the city manager in which you (a) discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each site, and (b) recommend a site for construction of the complex.
